Brazoria County Humane Society closes its doors

MANVEL – After 10 years of service, the Brazoria County Humane Society (BCHS) is closing its doors due to the retirement of its owner/operator, Shirley Tinnin. Tinnin has been facing health issues that have prevented her from being at the shelter and she has made the tough decision to shut it down.

While no new animals are being accepted for intake, the dogs that are currently adoptable will have a home until they can find their "forever" homes. Adoptions will continue to be held at the shelter, located at 6215 FM 1128 in Manvel, during regular business hours. Adoptions will also continue to be held at the Silverlake PetSmart, located at 3119 Silverlake Village Dr. on weekends from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. until all of the dogs have found permanent homes.

Tinnin and remaining volunteers are also trying to place some of the animals with other no-kill 501(c)(3) shelters. Because of the need to continue providing a home for current shelter residents, BCHS is in desperate need of financial help to pay for rent, electricity and other basics that will keep a roof over the dogs' heads. BCHS receives no funding from county or any other government agencies. They also need puppy food, hay and blankets to keep the dogs warm now that the weather has turned colder.

Monetary donations may be dropped off at the shelter or made online at http://www.brazoriacountyhumane.org/donate.htm[1]. All monetary donations are 100% tax deductible.

Donated items may be dropped off at the shelter during regular business hours.

Shirley Tinnin's love of dogs started this venture back in December of 2003. While she still feels the same about the animals, her health has taken priority. It is with a heavy heart that she shuts down the shelter and she is very grateful to the staff, volunteers and community members who made BCHS a haven for homeless animals for the past 10 years.
