DHS claims 11 National Merit finalists

All 11 Dawson High School semifinalists have advanced to the finalist stage of the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program:

Bofeng Chen
Augustus Ellis
Thomas Laroche
Grace Li
Jason Liu
Christopher Nguyen
Kevin Shao
Janie Vo
Shannon Wu
Steven Xu
Annie Zhang

These students number among approximately 15,000 finalists nationwide who are competing for Merit Scholarship awards -- worth more than $32 million:
• 2,500 National Merit scholarships (worth $2,500 each) awarded on a state-representational basis
• 1,000 corporate-sponsored National Merit scholarships provided by approximately 240 corporations/business organizations
• 4,800 college-sponsored National Merit scholarships from 200 colleges and universities for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution

In March, finalists will begin receiving scholarship offers.
Students qualified for the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program based on high Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test scores.

More than 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the program by taking the 2011 PSAT. Semifinalists, who ranked among the highest-scoring test-takers in each state, represented less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.

To become National Merit finalists, semifinalists had to show an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed by their principal and earn high SAT scores.
